Hempstead Ladders to Success
Hempstead Ladders to Success is funded by United Way and the Village of Hempstead. This program will prepare identified Hempstead High School students in Mathematics, Algebra, Reading and English to attain the placement test scores they need to avoid remedial classes and immediately access credit-bearing classes at Nassau Community College and beyond. This will be achieved through mentoring and counseling, tutoring to prepare for the accuplacer test. Additional services available at FCA’s Learning Center would include utilization of a career cruising software platform and assistance with FAFSA application and the college application process from start to finish.
FCA’s Learning Center, located in Hempstead, is a central learning site providing workshops and learning opportunities for all at-risk youth. Workshops are both supportive, social and psycho-educational, all aimed at individual growth to assist youth successfully transition into adulthood.
In 2018, we exceeded our expectations by having over 157 workshops with a duplicated count of over 1,000 youth participating in our weekly workshops. Topics range from how to deal with anxieties, mindfulness, bullying, cultural diversity, career readiness, interviewing, vocational planning, resume building, interviewing skills and assistance with the college application process from start to finish. Youth feedback is consistent that our workshops provide a non-judgmental safe space for them to work on needed life skills.
