FCA’s COVID Update: March 2021

Dec 22, 2021 | Happenings, News

One year ago,  I sent the entire FCA family an email detailing our plans for dealing with COVID. None of us knew the magnitude of what was to come or just how much our lives and our world would be turned upside down. The past year has been challenging on so many levels, but infection rates are leveling-off, vaccination rates are rising and together, we are defining a new normal. Still, we know that COVID exposed and exacerbated pre-existing fault lines in our communities. Health care, economic and educational disparities have grown. Overdoses have skyrocketed and completed suicides are on the rise.  Families who have lost loved ones trapped in nursing homes have been forever changed. There’s no vaccine for those ills, but that’s where our staff, volunteers and our community comes in.

None of our staff or volunteers (including our dedicated board) skipped a beat as we battled a relentless virus and all that comes with a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Their compassion, skills and resolve were on full display and you helped us keep a promise we made to our neighbors 136 years ago.  For that, I’m thankful.

I ended my email to our staff a year ago with these words, “Take a deep breath. Draw on your faith. Step away from the news and social media for a bit. And know that as long as we stand together, we got this.”

We stood together and as we turn the corner on this chapter, I couldn’t be prouder.

It’s not over, but we are stronger. And no matter what comes next, we got this.
