Garden City, N.Y., July 12, 2022 – On a bright sunny day on Long Island, a team of volunteers from Goldman Sachs’s Community TeamWorks initiative helped bring new life to Nassau Haven, FCA’s Runaway and Homeless Youth Emergency Shelter. The volunteers worked together to paint the multiple porches which serve as the entry points for Nassau County’s only shelter for youth experiencing homelessness. The wear and tear on these porches is representative of the constant influx of youth who turn to FCA for support when they have nowhere else to go and no one else to turn to. Nassau Haven has been in operation since 1982, and relies on donations and volunteers, like the group from Goldman’s Community TeamWorks, in order to keep the property in good condition.
This is not the first time that volunteers from Goldman’s Community TeamWorks initiative have come to FCA’s residences and traded their office days for a day of fun, giving back, and some hands-on home improvement. Staff of the program enjoyed speaking with the volunteers and sharing stories about the incredible work being done by FCA. FCA has 4 residential programs in total: two NYS Office of Children and Family Services RHY programs (Nassau Haven and Walkabout) and two NYS Office of Mental Health Community Residences (Lakeview House and West Nassau). Nassau Haven and Walkabout are both voluntary programs which rely on community and self-referrals.
