FCA President/CEO Appointed to Recreational Marijuana Task Force

MINEOLA, NEW YORK, January 18, 2019 – FCA President/Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds has been named to a Nassau County Task Force dedicated to exploring potential ramifications of legalizing recreational marijuana. The measure, widely supported by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, is a top priority of the State’s 2019 legislation.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced the task force creation during a press conference on Thursday, January 10th. The committee, comprised of prominent community leaders and co-chaired by Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Legislator Joshua Lafazan (who is also an FCA Board member), will examine the impact of legalization on public safety, business and other key areas.

In addition to the task force, Dr. Reynolds is a member of the workgroup appointed by Governor Cuomo last summer to draft legislation for a regulated adult-use marijuana program. The group was formed following a Department of Health study that concluded that the benefits of a regulated marijuana market outweighed potential risks. The study identified the need for subject matter experts to make recommendations to the State and help build on the Governor’s commitment to reduce the severity of marijuana offenses and improve access to medical marijuana.

“Legalizing recreational marijuana comes with significant public health and safety implications. Some states that have legalized the drug have seen more incidents of accidental ingestion by infants, an increase in adolescent drug treatment admissions and fatal car crashes, “ Dr. Reynolds explained. “Implementing a task force in Nassau County to examine and prevent such risks is critical to keep the community safe and minimizing health risks, especially among vulnerable populations.”

A longtime public health professional, Dr. Reynolds served as Executive Director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) from 2009-2014. He currently serves on Governor Cuomo’s Heroin and Opioid Task Force and on the Executive Committee of the Nassau County Heroin Prevention Task Force. Dr. Reynolds is Chair of Suffolk County’s Sober Home Oversight Board, the Huntington Town Opioid Task Force, and is a member of Suffolk County’s Heroin/Opiate Epidemic Advisory Panel.
