FCA Holds 34th Annual Scholarship Fund Breakfast for College-Bound Long Island Youth

MINEOLA, NEW YORK, June 20, 2019 – On June 19, 2019, Mineola-based nonprofit Family & Children’s Association (FCA) held its 34th annual Mission Moment Scholarship Fund Breakfast at Westbury Manor in Westbury, NY.

For more than three decades, FCA's Scholarship Fund has aimed to guide local youth toward successful futures by enabling at-risk individuals to pursue higher education and improve their lives by matching them with donors. More than 50 colIMG_3418.JPGlege scholarships were awarded, raising a total of over $105,000 this year.

Scholarship recipients were given the opportunity to meet the FCA donors who helped make their journey possible.  The annual reception recognized the extraordinary achievements of scholarship winners, and the dedicated staff and donors who contribute to the program.

This year’s Honoree, Network Outsource, represented by Adam Mahoney, President and Jim Woods, CTO, shared inspiring words with the students and spoke about how they became involved with FCA and the strong partnership that has been formed over the last 20 years.  The Network Outsource team donated two scholarships of their own in honor of a late employee who passed away. Jim Woods, CTO expressed the following:

“It is extremely important to us in that on an annual basis we honor one of our coworkers who unfortunately lost a battle with substance abuse at waytoo young an age.  He was someone who loved to learn, loved to teach everyone around him and loved to share information. Honoring him by helping the students who are going out and gaining knowledge and learning is the greatest pleasure that we can have.”

IMG_3369.JPGKeynote speaker, Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan, shared stories of his own educational journey and life lessons that lead him to where he is today, inspiring a sense of motivation and optimism for the future amongst the students.  As stated by Legislator Lafazan, “Continue to grow through what you go through. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks as sometimes they are what we need to continue at a stronger pace.”

Other speakers included NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, FCA President & CEO Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds and guest speaker, Laiylah Muhammad.

Laiylah Muhammad, former FCA Walkabout resident and participant of multiple FCA programs, spoke to the crowd about the hard times that FCA helped her through and the path that the organization set her on to become successful and shape the person that she is today.  She is now an aspiring entrepreneur and philanthropist, accomplished student and the proud mother to her beloved two year old son.

Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President/CEO, FCA, said, “It is those individuals that are closest to the problems that are also closest to the solutions. I am really proud that at FCA we embody that, that we live that and that we understand.”

Over the past 34 years, FCA’s Mission Moment Scholarship Fund has gifted over 1500 scholarships worth over $2,000,000 to students engaged with FCA’s programs and services.  Scholarship recipients have attended schools including Stony Brook University, Harvard, NYU, Hofstra University, Binghamton University, Nassau Community College, University at Albany, Yale, St. John’s University, DartIMG_3318.JPGmouth and many more!
