As a teen Melvin was forced to leave his family behind to escape the violence and gang warfare in his home country of Honduras. Melvin joined his father in Hempstead where he hoped for a life of safety and stability. Although Melvin’s mother and young siblings remained in Honduras, Melvin and his father worked to make enough money to send back to them to provide for their basic necessities.
Melvin was attending school and working at a local car wash with his dad. They lived together in a tiny one room apartment, but made ends meet and were glad to have each other. Then the pandemic hit. Increased hardship, job loss, and food scarcity quickly rocked their world, but never did Melvin think his life would be turned upside down like it was. In late April, Melvin’s father tested positive for COVID-19 and a month later passed away after a valiant battle with Coronavirus.
Alone, at the tender age of 18, Melvin found himself homeless, devastated and mourning the loss of his father with nowhere to turn. All that he and his father had worked hard towards was gone. His support system was decimated, and his comforts replaced by the absence of his father and the overwhelming uncertainties.
With nowhere to turn and stricken by grief, Melvin was referred to FCA’s Immigrant Support Services Hotline. A team of FCA staff provided Melvin with the resources he needed to cope and to take on the numerous challenges this young teen was now confronting. Most importantly, FCA helped secure a proper burial for his father.
“I am grateful that I have found meaningful work and that I can follow in my father’s footsteps as a bricklayer. I miss him very much and it means so much to me to be able to honor him in this way. I am happy to have a good future ahead of me now, thanks to FCA.” - Melvin

An Urgent Message From Our CEO
Many nonprofits have been devastated by COVID-19 as their ability to raise money has been drastically diminished due to the cancellation of in-person events. The vital services we provide like addiction prevention and treatment, mental health and wellness, senior and adult services and residential care are at risk as we have seen budgets slashed. We need your help now more then ever before.
Your donations will help Melvin as well as the over 30,000 children, seniors, families and communities we serve each and every year.
